Reducing carbon emissions of C&D waste in building refurbishment – DONE

Researchers from Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University in China have published a paper in Environmental Science and Pollution Research, highlighting the importance of managing construction and demolition (C&D) waste and reducing carbon emissions in building refurbishment projects. The study analyzed three waste management scenarios in a building refurbishment project in Suzhou, China. The researchers found that upcycling waste as substitutes for raw materials can significantly reduce carbon emissions. The scenario involving upcycling materials from a previous dismantlement achieved a 40% reduction in carbon emissions compared to traditional practice. Implementing a circular economy approach can minimize waste and reduce the demand for raw construction materials. The researchers emphasize the necessity of a circular economy to address environmental challenges and achieve carbon neutrality goals in China’s building sector. The research team includes Wenting Ma, Dr. Jian Li Hao, Dr. Cheng Zhang from XJTLU, and Luigi Di Sarno and Adam Mannis from the University of Liverpool.
